Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
The patterns might make us dizzy, but adding them to some toned-down basics will definitely have people following you in a mystified haze. Satisfaction guaran-tee-d. (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?)
You may find yourself looking at this photo and thinking… why?
I’ll tell you why, friends: because it’s there. In the spirit of the great George Mallory, I unabashedly desire these pants simply because they exist. In two colors. Both of which I need, badly. Not the top, though. I definitely do not need the top. Just the pants. (And how.)
I’m far from a gingham-basket-toting, country girl, but that doesn’t stop me from envisioning these pants with all kinds of “downtown” pairings - jersey biker jacket, platform wedges & a sheer camp shirt… They’re so graphic & bright that they’re easy to pair with more neutral, downplayed colors and patterns*.
* Not neon. Please.
I never thought I’d be a “lifer” in any aesthetic preference… but I think I am a lifer when it comes to stripes. (*A lifer is someone who sticks to a specific thing forever.) I can’t envision a world wherein I do not own at least 10 pieces of striped clothing. Vertical stripes are most coveted these days, but that doesn’t stop me from amassing a collection of comfortable, familiar stripes to pad my wardrobe. I love stripes most because they’re a bold, graphic pattern that can be used easily as a neutral! How clever, right?

A lingerie company that I love to swoon over, Brulee, is having a pretty amazing sale right now featuring their five excellent collections. The bra top above is from their Boudoir collection and is marked down from $108 to $54 - not bad! (And, yes, super cheap, silky panties for $9.30!)
Here are some other things I’m coveting from the sale:
You know what’s cool? Going to the beach on sunny, warm days and doing nothing but talking about whatever comes up with the people you’re close (or want to get close) with.
You know what’s not cool? Using old plastic bags (which you shouldn’t even have!@#), an old knotted shirt, a towel, or some other Macguyver’d contraption to carry your stuff around. It is not attractive, nor sustainable lady fashion. Acquiring a multi-tasking tote bag that doubles as a Carry Your Whole Life bag is not only a wise investment, but a saucy one - I’m in love with the red & white striped bag! So retro-but-not-really!
If you can find a decent one, it should be able to hold a blanket, a couple of water bottles, SUNSCREEN (do it.), and last, but obviously most important: snacks. Bonus points if you can get your hands on an ethical bag - like the Apple & Bee Burlap Bag above, part of the proceeds of which go to support environmental organizations! (But we can’t blame you if you can’t resist a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag for under $50…)

But they’re soooo cute on.
We found Rocket Dog’s Clover flats on sale at Marshall’s $19.99, but they’re also available at Delia’s for $25.99. We both tried the bottom pair, which is sailor-inspired with blue and white stripes and a pink anchor and it’s taking all of my efforts to not return to Marshall’s immediately and snatch them up before my size is gone…but if I can use online coupon codes to get these yachty flats for cheap, you bet your ass that’s just what I’ll do.
To get 20% off these sailor-inspired espadrilles (and anything else at Delia’s), use code 2RMNDE.
To get $20 off a purchase of $75 or more at Delia’s, use code 75RMNDE.
That makes my brand new shoes just as cheap at Delia’s as they are at Marshall’s. Score.
(Both of these codes expire June 14, 2012, so if you’re going to buy, jump on it!)
These open-toed floral wedge sandals by Mix. No. 6 are - get ready - really comfortable. The high wedge heel almost kept me from clicking on them, but when I did I found great reviews - an average 4 out of 5 stars - and only one caveat: they run large, so buy a half-size smaller than you usually would. Here are the specs:
My love for mint-colored clothing (and mint-with-red outfits) is as strong as ever, and when I stumbled upon this adorable picture of freshness on Lookbook, I felt the pangs of skirt-related jealousy creeping into my mind. I am not usually quite so feminine in my favors, but I can’t get enough of this softness - and that necklace layered over the soft white top is completely captivating!
To those of you who question the type of person who would actually wear neon - I will have you know that I am wearing neon. Yes, right now. This very moment. It’s growing on me, what can I say? I’m wearing it with ripped things and dark things because I’m a little insecure with how… luminescent I am, but I am happy when I look down and see that the top half of my body is a flowing chiffon highlighter.
I don’t think I would do multiple neon colors at one time, though. In fact, the idea that I’m wearing an entire piece of clothing in a neon color is part of what makes me a little tiny bit uneasy. I like starting small with stuff, and this was a big step. I’m stuck here now, and I accept that. You still have time, though.
I also want to take this opportunity to urge you to try neon! Seriously! It won’t kill you, I promise. Just start off with something small like super-cheap sandals or a scarf or something. Wait, not a scarf. That would look awful. Well, actually… do it anyway, maybe it’ll be great. I think everyone should “try” trends as they come out - at least once! - for anthropological reasons, but that’s just me.
Fences suck. Especially the fence between “rompers, cute!” and “rompers, ew!”
It’s a really blurry line for me right now! Previously, I’ve gone through two romper-related phases. The initial “Aw hell no!” phase, which lasted a while. Then, I entered the “Well, okay, they’re adorable, but they’re not for me” which I’ve been in for a year or so, and am pretty comfy in. So, now I’m standing here looking at this big jump between where I am now, and “PUT IT ON YOUR BODY” and I’m scared.
As I’ve been discussing with some gals on the Twitter (and thank Wedge I’m not alone), I’m growing so fond of cheap rompers, playsuits, whatever that I’m… starting to… have strange feelings.
…on my legs, Nabokov. It’s hot! Summer is starting super early because we’re killing the Earth and I can’t get away with pants forever. Plus, there are all of these really simple, really adorable cheap rompers coming out in stores… I am having a hard time knowing what to do.
* This post wasn’t sponsored by anyone (well, except me, I guess?) but it was brought to my attention by the fact that ASOS has boatloads of rompers under $100 and even more specifically under $50.
